This was the home where she came back after a long day at school. This was the home she would visit during college for rest, and to gather with family for holidays and celebrations. And today, it was the home where she was going to marry her love, Tim. Her parents had lovingly prepared their property for their daughter’s wedding — clearing out an area along the Harpswell Sound for a waterfront ceremony site nestled in the Maine woods. Jackie’s family had become particularly special to me, having photographed the wedding of their eldest son only months before. All of the emotion came rushing back to me, as well as the delight of walking into the event already knowing the faces and smiles of so many. New England weather, especially in coastal Maine, can change quickly, and some poorly timed rain showers passed through after the ceremony, sending all of the guests from the outdoor cocktail party which started on the lawn, inside to seek shelter under the reception tent. But I’ve rarely seen a couple like Jackie and Tim who smiled their way through whatever the weather brought, never once showing any sign of disappointment. They were gracious, appreciative, thankful, and so happy to be surrounded by their most loved friends and family, that no weather of any kind was going to dampen their day. For me, it meant I was free to produce my best work. If they were willing to brave some rain in their wedding attire, than I was willing to explore the possibilities and see where it took me. For me, that meant using the cover of the canopy of trees as some protection from the rain, and soft directional light coming off the water. When you add a couple as in love as Jackie and Tim, then the rest is really magic. And whether they knew it or not, they were as much a part of the collaboration and the resulting images, as I was. From start to finish, theirs was a celebration of love and family, in the one place where all of those sentiments are held most dear, and that place, is home.

To Jackie and Tim, we wish you many happy years!
